understanding stocks & share equities

A stock represents a piece of ownership, or a “share,” of a public corporation.

When you buy the stock of a company, you’re not only buying ownership in that company but also investing in that company in hopes of the value of the stock rising to turn into a profit.

Holding a particular company's share makes you a shareholder.

As a shareholder, you are entitled you to certain benefits such as dividends and voting rights.

Your ownership in the company is represented by the percentage of how many shares of the piece of pie you own. For example, if a company has 10,000 shares outstanding and an you are holding 1,000 shares, you own 10% stake in the company.

Stock prices can go up or down based on how well the company is doing and other factors such as the market demand and supply, management and the economy

A ticker symbol is used to easily identify a company which can consist of letters and numbers.

Ex: Apple’s ticker symbol is AAPL
